Work is now underway on a new coastal village in South Shields, which will see a number of local traders open up right by the sea. The project, led by the team behind the acclaimed Colman's Seafood Temple, is due to open in full in spring 2027.
Project takes shape at South Promenade
Developers have moved in to prepare the site on land at South Promenade, just adjacent to the Seafood Temple, the place where Princess Anne enjoyed fish and chips earlier this year. Plans approved earlier this year include provision for 20 beach huts, retail pods, offices and event space.
The coast-facing beach huts will be available for daily rental, while the retail spaces are being offered for hire on a first come, first served basis. A number of prestigious independent local traders have already agreed deals to open in the Coastal Village.
Colmans director excited by interest
Richard Colman Ord, director of Colmans Hospitality Group, said: "This is a fantastic opportunity to support a like-minded community of small businesses and bring something a little bit different to South Promenade."
He added: "It feels like starting work on our coastal village has been a long time coming but it’s exciting to see work finally getting underway."
New reason to visit the seafront
