Get ready to pack differently for your next European getaway. Ryanair, the budget airline synonymous with strict baggage rules, is rolling out a significant policy change that will affect millions of passengers departing from the UK and beyond.
Starting October 1st, 2024, the carrier's new 'Bags for All' fare structure comes into effect, fundamentally altering what you can take into the cabin for free.
What's Changing With Ryanair's Hand Luggage?
The core of the update centres on the small bag that every passenger is currently entitled to bring on board. Under the current system, all travellers can bring one small personal item (like a handbag or laptop bag) that must fit under the seat in front of them.
From October, this remains true, but with a crucial twist for those booking the cheapest standard fares. Only customers who pay for priority boarding will be permitted to bring a larger 10kg wheelie cabin bag into the aircraft cabin in addition to their small personal item.
Passengers on a standard fare will be limited to their single small bag under the seat. Any larger cabin bag will have to be checked into the hold at the airport—for a fee that is substantially higher than if you had pre-paid for it online.
How To Avoid Hefty Airport Fees
This change makes pre-planning your baggage more critical than ever. To avoid being caught out at the gate, you have two main options:
- Pre-pay for a 10kg Cabin Bag: Add this option during your online booking for a set fee, which is always cheaper than paying at the airport.
- Purchase Priority & 2 Cabin Bags: Opt for Priority Boarding. This secures you space for both your small bag and a 10kg wheelie bag in the overhead lockers, plus gives you the benefit of boarding the aircraft first.
The airline has been clear: attempting to bring a non-compliant bag to the gate will result in a baggage fee of £/€69.99 and the bag being placed in the hold. This is a steep price compared to the online rate, which can be as low as £/€6.99 during promotional periods.
Why The Change?
Ryanair states the move is designed to streamline the boarding process and reduce delays. By limiting the number of larger bags in the cabin, they aim to eliminate boarding gate chaos and ensure flights depart on time. The policy aims to guarantee overhead locker space for those who have paid for it, making the process smoother for everyone.
If your travel plans extend beyond October 1st, it's essential to review your baggage needs at the time of booking to ensure a seamless and cost-effective journey with Europe's largest low-cost airline.
