A Grand Welcome in Laugharne
The Great House, a Grade II* listed Georgian property in Laugharne—described by poet Dylan Thomas as 'the strangest town in Wales'—offers an unforgettable stay. The property, which can accommodate up to ten guests, features a heated swimming pool, hidden rooms, and a sweeping staircase with a stunning half-landing window overlooking the garden.
First Impressions and Hidden Surprises
Arriving via a small dead-end road, guests enter through an unassuming single garage door. As the automatic door opens, the rear of the house and its breathtaking garden are revealed. The property soars four storeys, with a lower lawn, a terrace with a heated pool set against magnolia trees, and an alfresco dining area seating up to twelve.
Interior Highlights: From Kitchen to Banqueting Hall
The lower ground floor features a welcoming kitchen lounge diner with exposed stone walls and a well-equipped kitchen including two tower fridge freezers, a dishwasher, and a double oven. The ground floor boasts a drawing room and library at the front, while the banqueting hall at the back contains an inglenook fireplace so large the whole group could stand in it. This fireplace was discovered when the current owner restored the property, which had been on the market for over 15 years before being bought in 1997. The restoration took over ten years.
Exceptional Bedrooms and Bathrooms
One bedroom features a stunning four-poster bed with plush pink fabric, and the ensuite has what the reviewer describes as 'the best shower I've ever used'—a large rainforest head plus a handheld shower, both usable simultaneously. Despite all four bathrooms being used at once, water pressure and heat remained unaffected. Two ensuite bedrooms on the upper floors have statement beds and huge ensuites with traditional roll-top baths (one pink, one blue) and the largest basins the group had ever seen.
Amenities and Activities
The converted loft level offers an exposed roof structure, a large smart TV, a pool table, and ample Wi-Fi boosted throughout the house. The property also provides books, games, and DVDs. Outside, the heated pool was maintained at 28 degrees Celsius for swimming and play, accompanied by jugs of Pimm's. Laugharne attractions include the castle, Dylan Thomas' boathouse, walks along the estuary, and Milk Wood House at Dylan Coastal Resort.
