Flight Attendants Reveal How to Actually Get a Cheap Upgrade

Booking an economy seat and landing a free upgrade to business or first class is the holy grail of travel, but it rarely happens. However, flight attendants have shared tips on how to improve your chances, and the key is to ask at the check-in desk, not at the aircraft door.

A British Airways cabin crew member explained: “Some people ask the crew at the door of the aircraft for an upgrade, and some even bring us sweets thinking it will help get them what they want. We do get a lot of people asking for a free upgrade, especially if it’s their birthday – but there’s nothing we can do so your best bet is to ask at the desk when you’re checking in.”

While asking at check-in doesn’t guarantee a free upgrade, it could secure a cheaper rate for moving up to business class. A Virgin Atlantic long-haul crew member noted: “Sadly nowadays [getting a free upgrade] is virtually impossible unless you pay for the upgrade as they sell the spare seats at check in. But it’s normally cheaper at check-in so worth a gamble as you could get a good deal.”

Joining airline loyalty programmes is another money-saving strategy. These are usually free to join and allow you to use air miles for upgrades. An Air France crew member revealed: “Passengers can sometimes get themselves into business or first class for less than the normal price, but it depends on how busy the aircraft is. If you have air miles you could try using them to get an upgrade.”

If you don’t bag an upgrade, there are still in-flight extras that can enhance your economy experience. The advice comes from a survey by travel money specialists Equals, who interviewed cabin crew from various airlines.
