Airlines are facing renewed calls to revise policies for larger passengers after a viral image sparked debate on social media. The photograph, originally shared by consumer advocate Christopher Elliott, shows a plus-size passenger on a flight from Helsinki to Copenhagen last year.
The image was later reposted by Miami hip-hop group Pretty Ricky, who argued that airlines have a responsibility to accommodate all customers. "Airlines will have to have something in place for plus-sized passengers," they said, noting the difficulty for both the passenger and those seated next to them.
The post generated over 2,000 comments, with many users suggesting larger passengers should pay for an extra seat. "If they take up two seats, they should pay for two seats," one user commented, while another proposed weighing passengers like luggage before check-in.
Some commenters raised broader societal issues, with one suggesting better eating habits as a solution. Others compared the situation to extra charges for pets or tall passengers, arguing that plus-size travellers should similarly pay for additional space.
