Pluckley, a charming village in Kent, is officially the most haunted village in Britain, according to Guinness World Records. With claims of 12 to 13 ghosts, it attracts ghost hunters from around the world. The village, just over an hour from London, features redbrick cottages and the historic St Nicholas' Church, which dates back 900 years.
The haunted epicentre is The Black Horse pub, built in 1420. Landlord Andy showed visitors the attic, said to be one of the most haunted spots in the pub. During a daytime visit, the atmosphere was more bustling country pub than spooky, but Andy assured that at night it becomes truly eerie.
In the churchyard, screams were heard, but they turned out to be from a group playing football on the village green. The village is also the setting for the non-terrifying TV classic The Darling Buds of May, written by HE Bates, who lived nearby.
Nearby Dering Woods, known as 'The Screaming Woods', is associated with sinister disappearances and terrifying screams at night. A daytime stroll revealed no shadows or ghosts, but the folklore remains strong. Despite the claims, the village felt more 'perfick' than petrified.
