Games Inbox: Will there be a new GTA 6 trailer before launch?

The Monday letters page suggests Rockstar release GTA 6 Trailer 3 to counter Cyberleek, as a reader feels retro revivals would be better than a God Of War overdose.

The game’s afoot

This Cyberleek stuff is so crazy. I can only imagine that there are actual private detectives and who knows what trying to work out who the leaker is and tracking them down, because they have a good chance of ruining the game’s launch if they keep going on about the nudity. That’s bound to catch the attention of a politician soon and then who knows what will happen! Apart from catching him, which they obviously haven’t done yet, I feel the best way to counter it all is with a new trailer. Not raw gameplay footage but a proper cinematic trailer. Considering how bad Cyberleek is at editing videos a really good one from Rockstar will be the perfect anecdote. There’s a good chance they were always planning one anyway, but if I were them I’d put it out now and then maybe get an extra one ready for when they were previously going to do it. My hype for GTA 6 is not being stoked by watching rubbish nude videos by an amateur, but with nothing else coming out I can’t resist watching! Ragman

Late contender

After an amazing couple of months, the release dates are thinning out and everyone’s starting to get ready for GTA 6. I haven’t decided if I’ll get it at launch. I’m not the biggest fan of the franchise but I have enjoyed it and I kind of feel if I’m going to have to hear about it non-stop for the next year, I might as well know what everyone’s talking about. The one other game I am interested in, though, is Phantom Blade Zero, which seems to be the last one before Zelda and GTA. All these Chinese Dark Souls clones can blur a bit into each other, but I liked your preview and I’m interested that this seems to be more like Devil May Cry, which would be neat. You asked before which game had the best melee combat of this year, so maybe we could have a late winner. It’d be great if we did because the hits just don’t stop coming at the moment and it’d be fun to see 2026 become the uncontested best year ever. Dolph

Great ape

Well, I spent my voucher for CeX on Donkey Kong Bananza. Cost me seven quid, all in. It’s really good, like really good, for a relativity B-tier franchise. You can tell it’s had that Super Mario team magic slavered all over it! It’s not every new game keeps me up until the early hours of a weekend, but this has been; just a little more smashing, just a little look around this corner, just three hours later! Oh, Banana! The amount of time I’ve changed along with that line upon unearthing another crystal banana… Oh, Banana! big boy bent

Third party discs

Good Reader’s Feature at the weekend, about Sony changing their disc policy. I agree at first it seemed like there was no chance, but while I still think it’s unlikely, I do feel they definitely now regret it. Or at least the way they announced it. Not just waiting for PlayStation 6 was the dumbest decision, because no one would’ve minded half as much then. But of course, it was all done to please Rockstar Games. For me, the best chance we have is if they licence out the ability to print discs to someone else, Limited Run or someone, and they can try and carry things on as before. The Marvel’s Wolverine sales figures prove it’s not just weirdo collector’s (like me) who want physical copies but mainstream casual gamers too, who don’t want to hand over £70 for a licence to play a download. It’s very interesting to think what might have happened if GTA 6 had come out when it was supposed to, a year earlier. Would Sony have made the same decision then? I feel they would’ve been a lot more wary, because they’re potentially messing up the peak time period for the PlayStation 5. But so close to the end of the generation, and GTA 6, I think they decided to go for it. It seems to be a bad decision for everyone. Royston

Modern view

RE: The Witcher 3. I’ve been going through this for weeks and I’m about 65 odd hours in and at the last mission of the main game. I’ve never played the DLC before, so looking forward to that. I downloaded the free remaster but I’m honestly not seeing any difference. The game looked great anyway on the PlayStation 5 and it’s made the inventory screen different but it’s still pretty rubbish. One strange thing is when I fast travel to Tretogor Gate, to listen to the music before taking the long way into Novigrad, the sky used to be a perfect blue with a few clouds but now looks like the geo-engineered sky we get today. It’s still one of my favourite games and I’m looking forward to 4. Simon

Tearful realisation

Playing Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom on the Switch 2 is what I imagine it must feel like to put on prescribed glasses for first time. The increased clarity and vibrancy of the visuals dramatically enhance the timeless aesthetics. The new lighting system is stunning. Not to mention the rock solid frame rate equally does wonders for the most taxing computational actions, like utilising the Ultrahand mechanic. I’ve been absorbed by the game all over again these past few months and still marvel over the technical and creative ingenuity of its design. Three and a half years on and Tears Of The Kingdom is still one of those very special games that should be rigorously studied – along with its seminal precursor Breath Of The Wild – in game design 101 classes in ‘How to raise the bar and create a 10 out of 10 video game’. Boggles the mind to think how Nintendo will top this gargantuan achievement with the next mainline Zelda! GG

Old fears

I noticed the 1994 horror Ecstatica is being released on Steam this month. I never played it back in the day and I was only reminded of it while recently watching the laughable GamesMaster gore special on YouTube. It looks… well, it looks terrible yet interesting. Is it a morbid curiosity worth checking out or best left in the past? David Hamill

GC: It’s 32 years old and very obscure, we’re not sure there’s going to be many people able to advise on that until it’s re-released.

Farming out

I’d welcome Sony reviving some of its dormant IP, as I only really jumped on PlayStation with PlayStation 4 I’ve no nostalgia for them really, except for WipEout, but would hope they’d bring some much needed variety to Sony’s first party line-up. Also, plug the gaps between big triple-A games. Doubling down on the biggest, safest IP has been Sony’s and the wider industry’s response to rising triple-A budgets. The devs of The Last Of Us, Horizon, and Spider-Man have all spoken of next instalments, with even a new Uncharted rumoured. But it’s God Of War that’s really being pumped. A next mainline game with Kratos has been raised, there’s a triple-A spin-off next February with Laufey, we just had an indie Metriodvania using the IP, there’s also a trilogy remake and a TV show in production. Some old IP in a variety of genres would be a nice balance to these big budget action adventure narrative games Sony is most known for now. Using outside devs would be sensible and Sony has a good history with that approach, most notably with FromSoftware and Team Ico. But also, Insomniac and Housemarque were long time Sony second party devs before they were purchased. Unless they end up buying the studios, then put them to work on live service – to only end up shuttering them, of course. Simundo

GC: Team Ico was always part of Japan Studio; it’s just that Fumito Ueda left Sony and was later brought back on as a freelancer.

I bought Red Dead Redemption on the cheap on Switch 2, to get me through until Zelda: Ocarina Of Time comes out. I have to say the sat nav on that game is shocking! freeway 77

I see Valor Mortis will be released next week. At a reduced price too. As a lover of both first person and Soulsborne games, I’m really hoping this turns out to be a great game. Can you say when you will be able to post a review? Coinslot-

GC: That depends when we finish it, but we will review it.
