A Perth couple's dream getaway turned into an absolute nightmare when they discovered their Airbnb rental was contaminated with used needles, blood-stained bedding and rotting food throughout the property.
Kriss and Kate Hardmann paid £650 for what they believed would be a comfortable stay in Perth, Scotland, but were instead greeted with what they described as "disgusting" and "uninhabitable" conditions that left them fearing for their health and safety.
Shocking Discoveries Throughout the Property
The horrified guests documented their ordeal with disturbing photographs and videos showing:
- Used needles carelessly left around the property
- Blood-stained sheets and bedding in sleeping areas
- Rotting food scattered throughout kitchen surfaces
- General filth and grime covering floors and furniture
- Unsanitary bathroom conditions that posed health risks
Mr Hardmann expressed his disbelief at the situation, stating: "We walked in and immediately knew something was wrong. The smell hit us first, then we started seeing the needles and the blood. We couldn't believe anyone would rent out a property in this condition."
Health and Safety Concerns
The couple highlighted serious health risks present in the property, particularly the discarded needles which could potentially transmit blood-borne diseases. "We have young family members who visit us," Mrs Hardmann explained. "The thought of what could have happened if we'd brought children here is terrifying."
Local health and safety experts have warned that such conditions violate multiple regulations governing short-term rentals and accommodation standards. The presence of medical waste like used needles represents a particularly serious breach that requires professional cleaning and disposal.
Airbnb's Response and Ongoing Investigation
Airbnb has launched a full investigation into the property and temporarily suspended the listing pending review. A spokesperson for the platform stated: "We have zero tolerance for this type of situation. The safety of our community is our priority, and we're conducting a thorough investigation into this matter."
The couple have received a full refund from Airbnb and additional compensation for their distress and inconvenience. However, they stress that the emotional impact of their experience will linger long after the financial matters are resolved.
Warning to Other Travellers
The Hardmanns are now speaking out to warn other potential guests about the importance of thoroughly researching properties and reading recent reviews before booking accommodation.
"Check the reviews carefully," Mr Hardmann advised. "Look for consistent patterns in feedback and be wary of properties with limited recent reviews. Our experience shows that even platforms with good reputations can have these kinds of properties slip through."
Tourism authorities in Perth have been notified about the incident, with local officials expressing concern about the impact such cases could have on the area's reputation as a tourist destination.
