A 29-year-old man has been praised online after refusing to swap his pre-booked aisle seat with a passenger who wanted to sit next to his girlfriend. The man, who is tall and had paid extra for legroom, was approached shortly after boarding by a fellow passenger who asked him to move to a middle seat at the back of the plane.
Writing on Reddit, the man explained that he had booked the aisle seat specifically for comfort during his flight home from a business trip. When he declined the request, the other passenger became annoyed and called him an 'inconsiderate loner'. The situation escalated until a flight attendant intervened, instructing the man to take his seat or face removal from the aircraft.
Many Reddit users supported the man's decision, with one commenter sharing a similar experience on a 12-hour flight from Korea to Toronto. In that case, the girlfriend began crying until another passenger agreed to swap, leading the commenter to criticise the couple's 'crocodile tears'. Another user noted that 'inconsiderate loners beat inconsiderate losers every time' in the battle for plane seats.
The original poster concluded: 'Couples don't get priority over people who planned ahead. Sorry not sorry.' His stance has sparked debate about seat-swapping etiquette, with many agreeing that passengers should not be expected to downgrade their seats for others' convenience.
