Newcastle United believed they had done enough to land Victor Munoz last Sunday, only for Liverpool to make a late play in a game of transfer poker. The Magpies had even arranged a medical in the United States to finalize the deal before Munoz returned home after the World Cup.
Deal Fell Through at the Last Minute
It is understood that Newcastle chiefs were told their offer had been accepted by Osasuna and Munoz's agent before a late twist saw Liverpool muscle in. Munoz was open to joining Newcastle, but the lure of Liverpool, Champions League football, and Andoni Iraola's keen interest ultimately swayed the 23-year-old.
Iraola's First Power Move
Iraola, in his first major move as Liverpool boss, instructed his transfer team to go hard for Munoz. The speedy left winger initially accepted personal terms from Newcastle, with Eddie Howe confident a deal would be done. However, Munoz chose to listen to Liverpool's offer and eventually opted for Anfield.
Newcastle's Response
Newcastle met all of Osasuna's demands and hoped to push the deal through last weekend. Sources later indicated Munoz had 'other options,' and in a rerun of last summer's James Trafford saga, a bidding rival upped the stakes late. The Magpies are now assessing options but will not react hastily, sticking to plans of signing hungry players for the Premier League.
Pre-Season Clock Ticking
For Eddie Howe, the clock is ticking towards pre-season, with only goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen signed from Stade Reims so far. Newcastle need a replacement for Anthony Gordon and are also targeting right-backs, midfielders, and a right-sided forward, while staying within SCR rules.
