British travellers planning trips to Europe will soon face new entry requirements under the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS). The scheme, set to launch in mid-2025, will require UK passport holders to complete an online application before visiting Schengen Zone countries.
How ETIAS Will Work
The ETIAS system functions similarly to the US ESTA programme. Travellers will need to:
- Complete an online application form
- Pay a €7 fee (waived for under-18s and over-70s)
- Receive electronic approval before travel
Approvals will typically be granted within minutes and remain valid for three years or until passport expiration.
Which Countries Are Affected?
The new rules apply to all 27 Schengen Zone nations, including popular destinations like:
- France
- Spain
- Italy
- Greece
- Germany
Non-Schengen EU members such as Ireland and Cyprus won't require ETIAS registration.
Why the Change?
The European Union introduced ETIAS to strengthen border security while maintaining visa-free travel for eligible visitors. The system will screen travellers against security databases before they arrive at European borders.
British tourists should note that ETIAS isn't a visa but rather a travel authorisation. The UK's post-Brexit status means British citizens now fall under third-country national rules for EU travel.
What Travellers Need to Do
Experts recommend:
- Checking passport validity (must have at least 3 months remaining)
- Applying for ETIAS at least 96 hours before departure
- Keeping digital and printed copies of approval
The process is designed to be quick and straightforward, with most applications approved immediately.
