Lothians West MSP Urges 'Think Local' After Visiting Winchburgh Businesses
MSP Urges 'Think Local' After Winchburgh Business Visits

Lothians West MSP Jenny Young is encouraging residents to “think local” after touring businesses in Winchburgh to mark Scotland Loves Local Week 2026. The newly elected Labour MSP, who took office on May 7, visited John Lawson Butchers and Delicatessen and Marley & Co Pet Supplies, meeting with owners to discuss their unique contributions to the community.

MSP Highlights Value of Local Enterprises

Young emphasised the growing appreciation for local businesses in an era dominated by online shopping and out-of-town retail centres. “People are appreciating what they can find in their local community more than ever before,” she said. The MSP noted that these enterprises add character to the area and provide products and services unlikely to be found elsewhere.

Scotland Loves Local is a national annual campaign celebrating local businesses, social enterprises, and community organisations. This year’s event ran from June 13 to 20.

Community Knowledge and Customer Focus

During her visits, Young spoke with John Lawson and Jordan at the butcher shop, gaining insight into their deep understanding of local needs. “Speaking to John and Jordan really made it clear just how much knowledge local business owners have about the community they serve—they know the local issues and they know what their customers want,” she stated.

Young urged residents to actively support their local economy: “If you live in Winchburgh or pass through, you’ll know these businesses and how highly they’re thought of in the community. I would urge anyone who has the time to think local, to get out into their local area and visit a business or community group that means something to them.”

Call to Action for West Lothian Residents

The MSP’s appeal comes amid broader efforts to bolster local economies across Scotland. By championing small businesses, Young aims to foster community resilience and preserve the distinctive character of towns like Winchburgh.
