The man, identified as a 73-year-old from Melbourne, Australia, went missing from the Disney Wonder at approximately 4:30 am on Saturday. The ship was navigating the Tasman Sea on a voyage from Melbourne to Auckland, New Zealand, at the time.

An extensive search and rescue operation was immediately launched. Crews utilised thermal imaging and surveillance cameras in a desperate attempt to locate the missing passenger. The operation lasted for over five hours after the alarm was raised, with the Disney Wonder turning around to assist in the search efforts.
