A major fire tore through a city centre hotel in Glasgow on Saturday evening, sending huge plumes of smoke over the streets and forcing the evacuation of several nearby buildings.
Evening Inferno on Virginia Street
Emergency services were called to Virginia Street at approximately 6:20pm on Saturday, 28 December 2025, after reports of a significant blaze. The fire is understood to have originated on the fourth floor of the Revolver Hotel. Dramatic images quickly circulated showing fierce flames erupting from the roof of the building, visible across parts of the city centre.
Horrified pedestrians and drivers were urged to avoid the area as firefighters began a desperate battle against the inferno. Locals watched from the streets below as the emergency operation unfolded.
Widespread Evacuation and Emergency Response
The scale of the fire necessitated immediate evacuations for safety. Neighbouring premises, including the historic Trades Hall, the House of Gods hotel, and Spires Serviced Suites, were all cleared. The Revolver Hotel is situated next to the well-known Polo Lounge gay club.
Scottish Fire and Rescue Service crews worked through the evening to bring the blaze under control. By the following morning, the hotel management confirmed the fire had been extinguished.
No Injuries Reported as Damage Assessed
In a statement released after the fire was put out, the Revolver Hotel expressed its gratitude. "We extend our sincere appreciation to the fire brigade for their swift response and professionalism, as well as to our staff for their calm and exemplary handling of the situation," a spokesperson said.
The statement confirmed the most crucial detail: "No one was harmed or injured." The hotel added that it is now working with authorities to assess the full extent of the damage. "We are working closely with the relevant authorities to complete all necessary assessments and ensure the continued safety of our guests and the businesses operating within the building," the statement concluded.
The cause of the fire is not yet known, and investigations are likely to be ongoing. The incident caused significant disruption in the heart of Glasgow on a Saturday evening, though the community was spared any loss of life.
