Luxury Cruise Ships Bring Hundreds of Tourists to Swansea

Hundreds of tourists have arrived in Swansea as two luxury cruise ships docked in the city, each receiving an authentic Welsh welcome. The Star Legend, operated by Windstar, was the first to arrive on June 14, carrying predominantly North American passengers who spent a full day exploring Swansea Bay. Just a few days later, on June 18, Ponant's Le Champlain glided into port, bringing more American visitors to experience the region.

Traditional Welsh Welcome

Upon arrival, visitors were treated to performances by the Phoenix (Male Voice) Choir of Wales and Atsain, a traditional Welsh band, facilitated by Associated British Ports (ABP). The Swansea Bay tourism team provided local insights and maps to help passengers make the most of their time. Guests were encouraged to explore the area's maritime heritage at local museums and galleries, discover Dylan Thomas connections, and enjoy fresh coastal cuisine.

Exploring Swansea and Beyond

While many passengers chose to stay in the city and explore its coastline, others opted for excursions such as a scenic tour of the Gower National Landscape. Swansea Council cabinet member for development, Andrew Williams, said: "We are delighted to welcome the cruise ships and their passengers to Swansea Bay. Visits like these provide a fantastic boost to our local businesses and showcase our area to a new global audience. The warm welcome they receive lays the groundwork for the future, inspiring many to return for a longer stay."

Growing Appeal as a Cruise Destination

These recent arrivals reinforce the growing appeal of Swansea Bay as a cruise destination, with momentum building steadily since the city welcomed the MV Hamburg last year. Ashley Curnow, divisional port manager at ABP, said: "We were delighted to welcome two cruise vessels to the Port of Swansea within the space of a week, both marking their maiden calls to the port. These visits reinforce south Wales' growing appeal as a cruise destination and Swansea's position as the gateway to Gower."

Dr Nicole Deufel, head of the National Waterfront Museum, added: "We're thrilled to play a part in welcoming cruise passengers to Swansea Bay, Mumbles, and Gower. As the museum moves to telling the stories of Wales and the sea, this is a wonderful opportunity to showcase our destination on a global stage."
