After more than two decades in hospitality, Chris and Toni McPartland have launched Dock & Brew on the corner of St Mary's Road and Garston Old Road in Liverpool's L19 area. The new coffee shop occupies a site that was a blinds showroom for 22 years, now completely renovated into a welcoming cafe. The family, who previously founded the popular Spoon Desserts brand, said they recognised a lack of community spaces in the neighbourhood and decided to fill the gap.
Family-Run Venture with Strong Local Support
Dock & Brew is a true family affair. Alongside Chris and Toni, their 19-year-old son Thomas works behind the counter, while daughters Sophie, Ella and Isla help serve customers, clear tables and keep younger visitors entertained with colouring sheets. Chris, 43, originally from Dingle, said: "We can't believe how quickly word has spread about Dock & Brew. The support we've received from the local community and our fellow L19 businesses has been incredible."
He added: "It's been amazing meeting so many local people over the past few weeks and creating somewhere that feels genuinely welcoming. We wanted Dock & Brew to be the sort of place that feels like popping to your nan's for a proper brew – down-to-earth, friendly and somewhere everyone feels at home."
From Dessert Trucks to a Permanent Cafe
Many locals already know the McPartland family through Spoon Desserts, whose fleet of dessert trucks appears at festivals and events across the country. The family also operates coffee and crêpe outlets across Liverpool. The new cafe, which had a soft opening in June, serves speciality coffee, fresh cakes, pastries and daily specials, with many sweet treats supplied by local favourites including The Butterholic and other independent bakers. Dogs are welcome, making it an ideal stop after a walk along Liverpool's waterfront or through nearby parks.
Community-Focused Future Plans
While great coffee is central to the business, the McPartland family said their long-term vision goes further. They hope Dock & Brew will become a focal point for the community, with plans to introduce a running club, cycling club, workshops, events and a regular meeting space for groups and organisations. Mum Toni, 43, added: "We've always believed great hospitality is about bringing people together. We hope Dock & Brew becomes somewhere people pop into every day, whether it's for their morning coffee, to catch up with friends, meet new people or simply enjoy a friendly face." She thanked everyone who has supported them so far, saying: "This is only the beginning, and we're so excited to become part of the L19 community."
Dock & Brew is open seven days a week: Monday to Saturday from 7am to 4pm, and Sunday from 8am to 4pm. It is located at 352 St Mary's Road, Garston, Liverpool, L19 0NQ. An official launch celebration is planned for later in the summer.
