Feed hedgehogs this autumn with tinned cat or dog food

As autumn approaches, hedgehogs begin searching for food and shelter before hibernation, and leaving out tinned meaty cat or dog food can draw them into your garden, according to the RSPCA.

Hedgehogs play a vital role in the ecosystem, and an appropriate garden setting can become a sanctuary if it offers plentiful nutritious foods and sheltered areas for them to hibernate. They are frequent garden visitors due to the diverse food sources available, as they forage for insects, worms, caterpillars, beetles and various other invertebrates.

What to feed hedgehogs

If your outdoor space lacks insects, the food your cats or dogs happily consume is also a firm favourite with wild hedgehogs. By leaving out some tinned meaty cat or dog food and crushed cat or dog biscuits, they are likely to make an appearance.

Ensure the food is placed in shallow dishes so they can reach it easily, and remember to replenish them daily, disposing of any uneaten food. Certain foods should be avoided entirely, particularly anything containing milk, as hedgehogs are lactose intolerant, which can trigger diarrhoea. Bread also poses a risk, primarily due to its complete lack of nutritional value for them.

Creating a hedgehog habitat

Beyond food, creating a natural shelter can encourage hedgehogs to return to your garden. Leaving piles of leaves, logs or compost in place rather than clearing them away gives hedgehogs a far better chance of constructing their own nest. Some people choose to purchase a purpose-built hedgehog house or construct one from wood, while others create so-called 'hedgehog highways' by cutting holes in fences to allow them to move freely between gardens.

The RSPCA has outlined a number of hazards that can endanger hedgehogs. One of the most important precautions at this time of year is thoroughly inspecting bonfires before lighting them, as hedgehogs may be nesting or sheltering inside. By relocating the entire bonfire beforehand, you give any small creatures concealed within the chance to escape to safety.
