Kynren's New Daytime Historical Theme Park Set to Open in County Durham This Summer
A groundbreaking live storytelling theme park is scheduled to launch in County Durham this summer, offering an immersive experience that diverges from traditional amusement parks. Named Kynren – The Storied Lands, this daytime attraction will feature a variety of live performances, including bird shows and action-packed battles on horseback, all inspired by Britain's rich history.
Immersive Historical Experiences and Unique Attractions
Unlike conventional theme parks filled with rides and rollercoasters, Kynren – The Storied Lands will focus on live-action storytelling. The park will host multiple shows throughout the day, such as a medieval horse display, a Viking spectacle, and a Victorian production. A key highlight is the Lost Feather arena, a 3,600-seat structure designed to resemble an eagle's nest, which will showcase 300 birds in free flight, including species like vultures, eagles, and owls.
Additionally, a lakeside venue is under construction to stage a performance based on the northeast legend of the Lambton Worm, a medieval monster-slaying tale brought to life with water stunts and special effects. The park will be adorned with historical backdrops, including thatched roofs created by experts from film and television, enhancing the immersive village setting.
Future Development and Economic Impact
Future phases of the park may include shows inspired by Robin Hood, the legend of Excalibur, and the Tudors. The charity behind the project, 11Arches, aims to maximize the site's potential during daytime hours, complementing its existing evening performances at sunset in Bishop Auckland, which feature a 1,000-strong cast and crew of volunteers portraying 2,000 years of historical events.
Anna Warnecke, CEO of Kynren – The Storied Lands, stated, "2026 is going to be an unforgettable year. Not only will our award-winning night show return, but we'll also open Kynren – The Storied Lands: a unique new experience that brings history, heritage and myth to life on a scale not seen anywhere else in the UK."
Durham County councillor Amanda Hopgood welcomed the development, noting, "As Durham County establishes itself as one of the great UK visitor destinations, this extravaganza will sit at the heart of the County's offering." With millions of pounds invested, the park is expected to create local jobs and attract more visitors, building on the tourism success of the evening performances.
