Venice may not immediately spring to mind for a family holiday, but Eurocamp is changing that with its self-catering camping holidays in European destinations. The company now offers eight sites near Venice, primarily on the Cavallino-Treporti peninsula, providing direct access to the Venetian Lagoon. Among these is the 60-hectare Union Lido beach resort, founded in 1955 and recognised as Italy's first five-star campsite.
Union Lido functions like a gated town, featuring two large water parks, a spa with an infinity pool overlooking the lagoon, around two dozen shops including supermarkets, a dozen eateries, outdoor pools, play areas, and an outdoor theatre. The park offers ample opportunities for both relaxation and exploration, serving as a base for visiting Venice or for spending weeks on-site without running out of activities.
Access from Marco Polo Airport is straightforward via bus, taxi, or water taxi, with a journey time of about 50 minutes. Guests can also hire a car, but the site is well-connected by public transport. Accommodation options include modern lodges with two double bedrooms, two bathrooms, a lounge-kitchen-dining area, and outdoor space. The lodges come with air conditioning, essential for the hot weather which often reaches 30°C.
Getting around the resort is easy on foot, or by landtrain or hired bikes. For budget-conscious travellers, discount supermarkets are accessible by bus or car, while on-site prices remain reasonable. The on-site bakery, grocery, and shops provide fresh produce for meals, and the numerous cafes and restaurants offer authentic Italian coffee and pizzas. Evening entertainment includes live music and shows on the beach.
For families, Union Lido provides a family-friendly blend of outdoor adventure, cultural exploration, and comfort. As Eurocamp's offering demonstrates, Venice can indeed be a dream destination for a family holiday, with the campsite turning a historic city into an accessible and enjoyable experience for all ages.
