Sprinkle Sand, Soil and Compost to Fix Bumpy Lawns, Says Gardening Expert

As spring arrives, many gardeners are turning their attention to lawns, but uneven grass can be a challenge. Gardening expert Michael, known as @themichaelgriffiths on social media, has shared a simple method to achieve a lush, bump-free lawn using a mix of sand, soil and compost.

Michael advises mowing the grass “really short” to a height of two to three centimetres before applying the top dressing. This makes it easier to see low spots and apply the mixture effectively.

The recommended blend is two parts topsoil, two parts sand and one part compost. According to Michael, “This combination provides bulk drainage and nutrients to help the grass flourish.” After mixing, spread the material over the mowed area and level it with the back of a rake or a lawn-levelling rake.

Once the mixture is evenly distributed, walk over it to press it into the ground. If needed, repeat the steps to cover all bumps. Finally, water gently to help the mix settle. Michael notes that now is a good time to prepare, though grass seed may need to wait about two weeks due to cold temperatures.

One follower commented that a professional quote for similar work was over £2,000, but they plan to attempt the DIY method after seeing Michael’s advice. The expert emphasises that this technique can make a lawn look instantly better without the need for re-turfing.
