As the summer holiday season approaches, travel experts are warning that some of the most familiar destinations for British tourists may be more dangerous than perceived. Countries such as Spain, France, Italy and Turkey, often considered safe, are highlighted for risks including crime, natural disasters and political instability.
Diana Peng from Just Wanderlust said Paris and Barcelona are notorious for pickpocketing and scamming. "I've heard so many horror stories ... it is rampant and yet, it's barely discussed," she said, noting that distracted tourists are easy targets.
Patrick Farrell of Viceroy Bali echoed the concern, pointing to Cancun and Acapulco in Mexico, where luxury retreats can be marred by safety issues outside resort areas. He advised consulting government travel advisories and local knowledge.
Ross Thompson at Covac Global highlighted geological risks in Naples, near Mount Vesuvius, and Tokyo, on a major seismic zone. He also warned of political upheaval in Turkey, kidnapping risks in Mexican cities, and disease threats in Bali, which combines active volcanoes, political unrest and exotic illnesses like Dengue Fever.
Christian Petzold, travel expert at BCN Travel, added that petty crime is rife in Paris and Rome, with scams near major attractions. He recommends using crossbody bags and staying alert. Thailand, while generally hospitable, also requires vigilance, he said.
