The Canterbury Christmas Market is expected to draw significant crowds this year after being highlighted by TripAdvisor as one of the most-searched Christmas markets, attracting millions of views and generating major interest among festive shoppers.
While the Kent city's market has traditionally flown under the radar compared to larger destinations such as Bath, Edinburgh, Manchester and York, the recent buzz suggests it is poised for a standout season.
Market details and opening dates
This year, the Canterbury Christmas Market will feature more than 120 traditional wooden huts, with 172 stallholders across 137 pitches, located in Whitefriars, St George's, and the Canterbury Cathedral Precincts. Despite its lesser-known status, it is described as one of the largest Christmas markets in the South East and the largest in Kent.
The market will open on Thursday, 12 November, and run continuously for 43 days, promising to "unfold a magical, festive spectacle that will warm your hearts." In addition to wooden stalls offering "handcrafted ornaments, unique gifts, and beautiful decorations," there will be seasonal music with live performances from a variety of artists.
Festive food and activities
Visitors can enjoy a range of seasonal treats, including traditional Bratwurst, churros, chocolate crepes, duck wraps, toasted marshmallows, and crumble cups. Warming beverages such as hot chocolates topped with cream, spiced mulled wine, and cider will also be available.
Admission to the market is free, but additional festive activities are available to book now. Children can enjoy breakfast with Santa, visit Dash's toy workshop rescue, try a Lapland VR experience, or visit Santa's Grotto with a talking letterbox, all at an extra charge.
Visitor feedback and booking
One TripAdvisor reviewer praised the market's organisation, writing: "Very well organised Christmas Market, split into three sections and placed in the pedestrianised area in front of the many local shops. A great variety of produce on sale at reasonable prices, and not just the gimmicky Christmas fare."
Another visitor commented: "Canterbury has definitely upped their game this year. Loads of different stalls, locations, and live music. Really worth a visit. Much better than previous years. We were there on the first night when they switched on the lights at various locations, and the vibe was great."
