Bruges Christmas Market: A Fairytale Destination Just Hours from the UK

With Christmas only weeks away, many are turning their thoughts to festive celebrations, and few experiences rival wandering through a European market with a mug of spiced mulled wine. The Bruges Christmas market, set against a backdrop of storybook charm and historic architecture, is just a short journey from the UK.

Known as 'Winter Glow', the market transforms the medieval city with Christmas trees, fairy lights, and wooden chalets. It features an ice skating rink and a captivating light trail through the city. The market runs from November 21 to January 4, spread across two locations: Grote Markt and Simon Stevinplein.

At Grote Markt, visitors can browse traditional wooden chalets offering handmade ornaments and Belgian chocolates, while skating on the ice rink. Simon Stevinplein focuses on short-chain and craft products. Nearby, cobbled streets lead to cosy cafés where the aroma of local chocolatiers mingles with Gothic architecture.

The market is a food lover's paradise, with Belgian waffles, cheeses, mulled wine, and traditional beer at the 'IJsgloed' Winter Bar overlooking the rink. The bar is decorated with lights, wooden barstools, and barrels, offering a warm retreat. Visitors can also follow the 3.5 km light trail, featuring ten installations in unexpected venues.

Beyond the market, climb the 366 steps of the 83-metre-high Belfry of Bruges for panoramic views, or stroll along the canals known as the 'Venice of the North'. Minnewaterpark offers a peaceful lake and serene surroundings. Travel is easy: Eurostar from London St Pancras to Brussels takes under two hours, followed by a one-hour train to Bruges.
