Forget candlelit dinners for two—the new British holiday is a bustling, laughter-filled affair with the entire family. A significant shift in travel habits is underway, as a whopping 63% of UK parents now prioritise holidays with their children and extended family over romantic getaways with a partner.
The research, commissioned by leading holiday park operator Center Parcs, reveals that creating core memories for their offspring is the primary driver for 59% of mums and dads. This move towards multi-generational trips isn't just a fleeting fancy; it's a calculated choice by parents who believe these shared experiences are fundamental to a happy childhood.
The Rise of the Multi-Generational Escape
Gone are the days of leaving the kids with grandparents. Today, everyone comes along. The study found that more than half (52%) of British families have embraced the trend of holidaying with multiple generations under one roof—or more aptly, one resort roof.
This surge is fuelled by a desire to strengthen family bonds. A resounding 67% of parents stated that holidays provide the perfect opportunity for their children to build a deeper connection with their grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins away from the distractions of everyday life.
Quality Time Trumps Sun, Sea, and Sand
While a sunny destination is a bonus, the real value of a UK family holiday is measured in quality time. The data shows that parents feel the benefits long after the suitcases are unpacked:
- Strengthened Bonds: 64% believe their family unit is closer because of the holidays they take together.
- Unplugged and Connected: Over half (55%) appreciate that a holiday is one of the few times the family can truly switch off from devices and focus on each other.
- Creating a Legacy: 46% of parents consciously choose holidays that they hope their children will remember fondly for years to come.
Colin Whaley, Marketing Director at Center Parcs, commented: "It's clear from the research that the meaning of a family holiday has changed. It's now about so much more than just a break; it's an investment in family time and togetherness."
What Makes the Perfect Modern Family Holiday?
So, what are families looking for? The study pinpointed the top ingredients for a successful trip. Topping the wishlist are facilities and activities that cater to all ages, allowing everyone to have fun together. The convenience of having accommodation, entertainment, and dining options in one secure location is also a major draw for parents organising a large group.
This trend signifies a profound change in the British approach to leisure, placing a higher value on collective experiences and emotional investment in family time than on traditional romantic retreats.
