Spain's Appeal to British Emigrants Declines as Portugal Gains Favour
British Emigration Searches Shift from Spain to Portugal

For decades, Spain has captivated British citizens seeking sun-drenched beaches, a relaxed Mediterranean lifestyle, and reliably pleasant weather. However, fresh analysis indicates this longstanding allure may be waning, as emigration-related searches from the UK have significantly decreased.

Sharp Decline in Spanish Relocation Interest

According to comprehensive research conducted by removal specialists 1st Move International, there has been a notable 28 per cent year-on-year reduction in Google searches from Britain concerning emigration to Spain. The study meticulously examined UK search data, comparing periods from September 2023 to August 2024 against September 2024 to August 2025. This downturn suggests a potential shift in where Britons are considering establishing new homes abroad.

Spain Slips in Popularity Rankings

Historically a premier destination for British retirees and those desiring a warmer climate, Spain now finds itself ranked ninth amongst countries experiencing the most substantial declines in relocation-related search interest. While it remains within the overall top ten desirable locations, the data signals a changing landscape. The most dramatic fall was observed for Rwanda, with a precipitous 71.7 per cent drop, followed by Iceland and El Salvador.

Portugal Emerges as a Rising Alternative

In contrast to Spain's declining appeal, neighbouring Portugal is capturing greater attention from prospective British movers. The research highlights a consistent four per cent annual increase in interest towards Portugal, securing its position as the sixth most sought-after relocation destination. This European nation, which shares similar attractions of superb weather and stunning coastal scenery, appears to be benefiting from a comparative reassessment by UK residents.

Expert Analysis on the Shifting Trends

Mike Harvey, Managing Director at 1st Move International, attributes Spain's relative decline to two primary factors: rampant overtourism and the implementation of taxes targeting foreign property buyers. 'Spain's long been a UK favourite for retirees and Brits looking for a warmer, calmer pace of life, and for now that remains true,' Harvey comments. 'However, mass tourism and the decision to impose taxes on foreign property buyers have affected affordability. This has made it more complex for retirees and long-term residents to move to Spain.'

Harvey further elaborates that these developments could have unintended consequences for international buyers and those seeking a flexible lifestyle abroad. He notes a clear trend: 'Spain's interest among Brits has begun to dip, and neighbour Portugal may take Spain's crown in the coming years. Portugal's already firmly among Brits' top 10 expat hotspots, and it's creeping up the ladder.' Supporting this observation, emigration searches for Portugal have surged by 18.90 per cent year on year.

Global Relocation Search Leaders

Despite the shifting dynamics within Europe, the research confirms that Canada continues to dominate as the most searched-for emigration destination from the UK, amassing an impressive 269,220 relocation queries over the past year. Australia follows closely in second place with 207,900 searches, while Ireland claims the third spot with 179,400 Google searches. This indicates that traditional Anglophone countries retain a powerful draw for British citizens contemplating a move overseas.

The evolving data underscores a broader narrative of changing preferences and practical considerations influencing British emigration plans. While Spain's sun-soaked shores remain attractive, emerging challenges are prompting many to look towards alternatives like Portugal, potentially redrawing the map of Britain's favourite expatriate havens for the future.
