Three men have been arrested in connection with the death of an 88-year-old British tourist who was mugged outside his holiday apartment in Tenerife. The victim, identified only as Ray, died in hospital after the attack in Los Cristianos on Wednesday.
The incident occurred at the entrance to the Victoria Court II apartment block, where Ray was with his 79-year-old wife. During a brief struggle, he fell backwards, hit his head, and went into cardiac arrest. Emergency responders revived him at the scene, but he later died from his head wound.
A spokesman for Spain's National Police confirmed the arrests, though it is not yet clear whether the suspects face homicide charges. The trio were taken into custody shortly after news of the pensioner's death emerged.
Friends and locals have paid tribute to Ray, who had recently celebrated his birthday at the Big Ben Pub in Los Cristianos. A bouquet left at the scene bore the message: 'RIP Ray, We Will Miss You.' One friend recalled meeting him two weeks ago, describing him as 'such a lovely man.'
Expats and regular visitors to the area have voiced concerns over a perceived rise in muggings, with one resident noting this was the fourth incident in the same location in three months. Calls have been made for increased police action to address the problem.
