Britannia Pier in Great Yarmouth Crowned UK's Pier of the Year 2026
Britannia Pier Wins Pier of the Year 2026 Award

The quintessential British seaside experience, complete with sticky ice cream, vibrant arcades, and the soothing sound of crashing waves, is perfectly encapsulated at Great Yarmouth's Britannia Pier. This historic structure, dating back to 1901, has now been honoured as the Pier of the Year 2026 by the National Piers Society, a national organisation dedicated to advocating for seaside piers at both local and governmental levels.

A Triumph Over National Competition

In a fiercely contested competition, Britannia Pier stood out among 62 other seaside piers from across the United Kingdom. The award recognises the exceptional efforts and investments made since Triangle Amusements acquired the pier in 2022, passionately restoring it to its former glory. Judges were particularly impressed with the rapid and substantial improvements implemented by the new owners.

Key Renovations and Family Appeal

Notable enhancements include a redeveloped Art Moderne entrance building and significant upgrades to the Pier Theatre, one of only five operational pier theatres in the country. These developments have not only revitalised the pier's infrastructure but also enhanced its appeal as a family-friendly destination. The warm welcome and engaging experience offered to visitors were highlighted as standout features by the judging panel.

Owners' Pride and Vision

Co-owner Joseph Abbott expressed immense pride, describing the award as a 'huge honour' that 'fills the whole team with pride'. He emphasised the significance of being recognised alongside esteemed previous winners such as Llandudno and Cromer piers. Abbott stated, 'We feel this is a huge testament to us as new owners for the work, time, and investment we have put in since our takeover in December 2022. It's certainly something we're personally very proud of!'

Strategic Redevelopment Plans

Abbott outlined the company's vision for a phased redevelopment, saying, 'We had a plan and we quickly set to work to implement the upgrades.' The goal is to increase footfall, extend the trading season, and transform the pier into a year-round venue offering entertainment like theatre shows and events for the local community. He added, 'We aim to offer a wide range of high-quality attractions, amusements, eateries, entertainment, and bars to give the public a year-round entertainment venue whilst always trying to uphold the pier's iconic history and nostalgia.'

Recognition and Future Prospects

The award has provided a significant morale boost, with Abbott noting, 'This coveted award has re-assured us here at 'Team Britannia' that we are heading in the right direction, and that all our hard work has now been recognised by others!' He extended gratitude to the National Piers Society members, saying, 'It's given us all a huge boost, and we would like to say a massive thank you... This pier has a huge history behind it, and this award has just added another chapter to its ongoing story! Long may it continue.'

Competition Results and Industry Praise

Britannia Pier secured the top spot ahead of runner-up Herne Bay Pier and third-placed Swanage Pier, taking over the crown from Llandudno Pier, which was awarded Pier of the Year 2025. National Piers Society chairman Tim Wardley congratulated the winners, stating, 'Huge congratulations to the worthiest of winners who have shown that in challenging economic times investment is still the way forward to success.' He praised the new developments and attractions, noting that members were 'hugely impressed' during visits last year.

National Piers Society patron Gyles Brandreth also celebrated the achievement, exclaiming, 'Three cheers for Britannia Pier! Well done and huge congratulations.' The society looks forward to presenting the award in person during the summer, eager to see the new attractions in full operation.
