Britannia Pier in Great Yarmouth has been crowned the UK's best seaside pier for 2026, following a significant £2.2 million refurbishment. The pier, which originally opened in 1858, offers a quintessential British seaside experience with amusement arcades, rides, bars, pubs, and stunning coastal views.
A Historic Transformation
Purchased in December 2022 by businessman Joseph Abbott and his wife Cherise, the pier has undergone extensive renovations. The old 1970s sign has been replaced with a modern façade and an eight-metre digital advertisement screen. The amusement arcade has tripled in size, and new rides, attractions, and food stalls have been introduced. Future plans include renovating the Pier Tavern with bifold doors opening onto a seafront terrace.
Traditional Seaside Delights
Visitors can enjoy a variety of dining options, including a fresh seafood bar, an American burger bar, and the beloved Krispies Fish & Chip restaurant. For sweet treats, there are stalls offering warm doughnuts, ice cream, and churros. At the end of the pier, the Britannia Pier Theatre, one of only five remaining pier theatres in the UK, continues to host entertaining shows.
Award-Winning Recognition
Britannia Pier was named 'Pier of the Year 2026' by the National Piers Society, beating 62 other piers across the UK. Joseph Abbott expressed his delight, recalling childhood visits to the pier. Visitors have praised the renovation on TripAdvisor, noting the spacious feel and improved facilities, though some suggested more frequent toilet cleaning.
