Baz Luhrmann Unveils Exclusive Private Dining Carriage for Belmond British Pullman
Oscar-nominated filmmaker Baz Luhrmann, renowned for his visually opulent works such as The Great Gatsby and Moulin Rouge!, has collaborated with Oscar-winning production designer Catherine Martin to create a new carriage for the luxurious Belmond British Pullman train. Named "Celia", this self-contained compartment serves as a private dining area, accommodating up to 12 guests and starting at a price of £15,000. The Belmond British Pullman is a private train celebrated for its restored carriages that evoke the golden age of 1920s rail travel, offering day and weekend trips across the UK.
Exclusive Features and Design Inspiration
Unlike other carriages where passengers may mingle, Celia provides a secluded space featuring a lounge, bar, separate pantry, and kitchen. On request, a private chef will craft customised menus using seasonal British produce, tailored for grand banquets, intimate celebrations, theatrical performances, or even as a dance floor. The design draws inspiration from the British countryside and Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, incorporating elements such as an elaborate fabric ceiling, veneered marquetry wood designs, velvet upholstered furniture, heavy curtains, and mystical hand-painted motifs.
Luhrmann's Vision for a Magical Journey
In a statement, Baz Luhrmann expressed his enthusiasm for the project, saying, "For Catherine and I, creating Celia was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, allowing us to push the boundaries of creativity, luxury, and uniqueness. Stepping inside the carriage is like being transported into another world, and one in which guests are invited to become part of the story. Celia, at its heart, is a magical mystery tour – a travelling dining experience for friends or an intimate celebration, filled with food, music, wine, laughter, and performance. It's a playful and exceptionally unique way to explore the UK, at your own pace and according to your own rhythm and story."
Continuing a Tradition of Filmmaker Designs
This initiative follows a trend of filmmakers contributing to the British Pullman's aesthetic. Further along the train, passengers can find "Cygnus", a carriage designed by Wes Anderson, known for his symmetrical aesthetics and retro set designs. The addition of Celia enhances the train's reputation as a premier luxury travel option, blending cinematic artistry with high-end hospitality to create unforgettable journeys through the British landscape.
