Half of Brits Lack Football Knowledge Ahead of World Cup, Survey Reveals

New research from Asda has revealed that nearly half of Brits feel out of their depth when discussing football, with 60% admitting they are fair-weather fans. The survey found that 28% lack confidence in joining conversations about the sport, while 46% worry about saying the wrong thing in front of more knowledgeable supporters.

Despite this, 74% of respondents said they still enjoy the big moments of tournaments, even if they don't fully understand what is happening. To help bridge the gap, Asda has enlisted former England star Chris Kamara and ex-Scotland striker Kris Boyd to launch a video series called Match Day Fit, which breaks down the basics of the game.

The series, filmed in Asda stores, covers confusing rules such as offside and player positions. Kamara commented: "Football is for everyone. Whether you've watched it your whole life or you only tune in when the big tournaments come around, we've all got to start somewhere." Boyd added: "Big tournaments bring everyone together, and you don't need to know every formation to enjoy it."

Asda will also have colleagues in stores wearing badges identifying themselves as either 'Football Fanatic' or 'Fair-Weather Fan' to encourage conversations about the upcoming tournament. The Match Day Fit videos will be available on Asda's social media channels.
