Renowned for his extravagant and visually stunning films such as Romeo + Juliet, The Great Gatsby, Elvis, and Moulin Rouge, director Baz Luhrmann is now channeling his signature flair into a new venture: a private dining and events carriage for the iconic British Pullman train. This latest project, set to debut in summer 2026, promises to be just as ostentatious, glamorous, and colourful as his cinematic works.
A Collaboration of Creative Minds
The new carriage, named 'Celia', is a collaborative effort between Luhrmann and Oscar-winning costume and production designer Catherine Martin. Operating as a self-contained private space within the British Pullman, a Belmond Train, Celia will feature its own dedicated stewards to ensure an exclusive and personalised experience for guests. Departing from London's Victoria Station on all British Pullman journeys, it aims to transform travel into an immersive entertainment venue.
Inspired by Shakespeare and the British Countryside
Drawing inspiration from A Midsummer Night's Dream and the picturesque British countryside, the carriage's design is steeped in theatricality. Its name, Celia, is derived from Luhrmann's fictional muse, imagined as a leading lady who performed as Titania, Queen of the Fairies, in a West End production in 1932 and was gifted her own Pullman car. This backstory infuses the interiors with a sense of fantasy and drama.
The carriage's decor includes an elaborate fabric ceiling, thick velvet upholstered furniture, and floral motifs in rich greens, yellows, reds, and purples. Heavy theatre-style curtains will divide the space, while a separate powder room boasts a mosaic and hand-painted ceiling and walls adorned with flowers and motifs, creating an enchanting atmosphere.
Luxurious Amenities and Personalised Experiences
Seating up to 12 guests, Celia offers a dining area, lounge, bar, pantry, and kitchen. On request, a private chef can design customised menus using seasonal British produce, allowing for tailored onboard and offboard experiences. This flexibility ensures that every journey can be unique, whether for intimate celebrations or gatherings with friends.
In a statement, Baz Luhrmann expressed his enthusiasm: 'Creating Celia was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, allowing us to push the boundaries of creativity, luxury, and uniqueness. Stepping inside the carriage is like being transported into another world, and one in which guests are invited to become part of the story. Celia, at its heart, is a magical mystery tour - a traveling dining experience filled with food, music, wine, laughter, and performance. All of this unfolds as you drift through the countryside, feeling as though you've stepped inside A Midsummer Night's Dream. It's a playful and exceptionally unique way to explore the UK, at your own pace and according to your own rhythm and story.'
Pricing and Availability
Exclusive use of the Celia carriage aboard the British Pullman starts from £15,000, which includes transfers within Greater London. This premium offering underscores the project's commitment to luxury and exclusivity, targeting travellers seeking a one-of-a-kind journey through the UK's scenic landscapes.
With its blend of cinematic inspiration, bespoke design, and high-end amenities, the Celia carriage is poised to redefine luxury rail travel, offering an unforgettable experience that mirrors the opulence of Luhrmann's filmography.
