According to sources, Pelley told the meeting: 'She's murdering 60 Minutes. She does not love this place. She was brought in to kill it and is doing exactly that.' The remarks were directed at Weiss, who has been a controversial figure since her appointment. CBS News managing editor Charles Forelle accused Pelley of being rude, to which Pelley replied that the network had been rude in its treatment of fired executive producer Tanya Simon.
Newly appointed executive producer Nick Bilton told Pelley he would not be 'intimidated' by his comments. However, staff present at the meeting gave Pelley a standing ovation in support. A CBS News spokesperson declined to comment on the meeting, though sources said overtures have been made to Pelley, who is considered an important part of the show.
The confrontation raises questions about Pelley's long-term future at 60 Minutes. The tension follows a series of departures and public statements from fired correspondents. Alfonsi, whose contract was not renewed for the 59th season, released a statement saying: 'The wall between editorial independence and corporate interest at CBS is being methodically torn down.' Vega, who joined in 2023, alleged efforts to 'insert political bias' into stories, describing it as 'censorship, both imposed and self-driven.' CBS contested her characterization.
