Historic Birnbeck Pier in Weston-super-Mare Rescued by £4.3 Million National Lottery Grant
£4.3M Lottery Lifeline Saves Historic Birnbeck Pier

The future of one of Britain's most at-risk Victorian piers has been dramatically secured after a multi-million pound National Lottery grant was approved for its rescue. Historic Birnbeck Pier in Weston-super-Mare, which has been on the Heritage at Risk register for decades, has been awarded £4.3 million for a full-scale restoration.

The funding, confirmed by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, marks the culmination of a long and complex campaign to save the unique structure. Unlike the town's other pier, which is a leisure pier, Birnbeck is the only pier in the UK that links an island to the mainland, giving it a singular place in British maritime history.

A Pier Steeped in History and Rescue

Birnbeck Pier's story is intrinsically linked to rescue. It was famously used by the RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution) for over 130 years, providing a crucial launch point for lifeboats. The project aims to honour this legacy by not only restoring the pier but also creating a new permanent home and visitor centre for the RNLI within the restored North Toll House on the mainland.

North Somerset Council, which now owns the pier after a compulsory purchase order, leads the £19.3 million regeneration project. The National Lottery grant is the single largest contribution, providing the essential funding needed to get the physical restoration work underway.

From Decay to Destination: The Vision for the Future

The ambitious plan goes beyond mere structural repair. The vision is to transform the entire Birnbeck Island and pier into a vibrant heritage destination for the public. Proposed works include:

  • Urgent structural stabilisation and repairs to the pier's legs and deck.
  • Meticulous restoration of the historic pier buildings.
  • Creating new visitor facilities, including a café and exhibition spaces.
  • Establishing a new RNLI visitor centre and operational base.
  • Improving public access and reconnecting the community with its heritage.

This investment is seen as a major catalyst for the wider regeneration of the Weston-super-Mare seafront, promising to boost local tourism and the economy.

A Long-Awaited Victory for the Community

For local residents and heritage campaigners, the announcement is a momentous victory. The pier had fallen into severe disrepair under previous private ownership, with its condition deteriorating to a critical state. The successful Compulsory Purchase Order by the council in 2023 was the first major step towards its salvation.

The £4.3 million grant is the final piece of the funding puzzle, unlocking other contributions and ensuring the 'Birnbeck Pier Regeneration Project' can finally proceed. It represents a new chapter for this iconic landmark, ensuring its stories of innovation, rescue, and community spirit are preserved for generations to come.
