Victor Munoz Signs Six-Year Liverpool Deal After Newcastle Hijack

Liverpool have officially announced the signing of Victor Munoz from Osasuna on a permanent transfer, securing the winger's services for six years after outmaneuvering Newcastle United in the race for his signature.

Munoz Becomes Iraola's First Signing

The Spain international has committed to a long-term contract at Anfield, marking the first acquisition of the Andoni Iraola era. Liverpool triggered Munoz's release clause, valued at just under £35 million, to edge ahead of Newcastle and finalize the deal.

Munoz, 22, was also pursued by Bayer Leverkusen and Manchester United, while Real Madrid briefly considered re-signing him after selling him to Osasuna last summer. However, Iraola's vision for Liverpool convinced the winger to choose the Reds.

Medical Completed in the USA

The transfer was completed after a Liverpool delegation flew to the United States, where Spain is based for the World Cup, to conduct Munoz's medical in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The procedure took place on Wednesday, with Munoz not involved in Spain's opening World Cup match—a goalless draw against Cape Verde.

Liverpool's interest intensified after early discussions between Iraola and the club's recruitment staff, with the manager expressing strong admiration for the former Real Madrid youngster. The fee will be paid in two installments.

Strengthening the Forward Line

Munoz is expected to add depth to Liverpool's attack, which lost Mohamed Salah at the end of last season and will be without Hugo Ekitike for an extended period due to a ruptured Achilles. The versatile winger primarily operates from the left flank and is seen as a player who can enhance the performance of Alexander Isak.

In 34 La Liga appearances for Osasuna last season, Munoz scored six goals and provided two assists. He joined Osasuna from Real Madrid for just €5 million last summer.

Third Blow to Newcastle

This transfer marks the third time in a year that Liverpool has dealt Newcastle a significant setback in the transfer market. Previously, Liverpool won the race for Ekitike and then secured Isak for a British record fee of £125 million, despite Newcastle's preference to keep the Swedish international.

Born in Catalonia, Munoz spent three years in Barcelona's La Masia academy before moving to Real Madrid at age 18 via Catalan youth side CF Damm.
