A devastating fuel truck explosion at the base of the Bridge of the Americas over the Panama Canal has resulted in one fatality and prompted immediate closure of the critical infrastructure link. The incident, which occurred around 4 p.m. on Monday, was captured on security cameras showing a massive fireball ascending toward the bridge's apex.
Casualties and Immediate Response
Authorities confirmed that one fuel truck worker perished in the blast. Two firefighters sustained injuries while extinguishing the flames, but no other individuals were harmed, despite several cars being on the bridge at the time. Víctor Raúl Álvarez, director of Panama's Fire Department, stated that the investigation is in its preliminary stages, with the cause of the explosion yet to be determined.
Structural Concerns and Safety Measures
Engineers have raised alarms about potential damage to the bridge's integrity due to the intense heat from the fire. Edwin Lewis, an engineer at the Public Works Ministry, explained that the 60-year-old structure may have suffered harm if its metal components were exposed to excessively high temperatures. Specialized teams are currently evaluating concrete and metal elements to assess any structural compromise.
Panama's Public Works Ministry released a video on social media Tuesday depicting engineers surveying the site for damage. President José Raúl Mulino warned via X that the closure would cause significant disruption, expressing hope for a swift return to normalcy. Officials have declared that the bridge will remain closed until safety can be fully verified, with no timeline provided for its reopening.
