Manchester United are pressing ahead with their summer transfer plans despite the World Cup, with significant developments emerging regarding both incomings and outgoings at Old Trafford. The club is close to finalising a £39million deal for Ederson, while also making headway in the pursuit of another midfielder.
Fernandes Agrees Personal Terms with United
In a breakthrough many at Old Trafford have been anticipating, West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes has reportedly agreed personal terms with Manchester United. According to talkSPORT, the Portugal international is satisfied with the contract proposal put forward by United, following West Ham's relegation to the Championship.
The 21-year-old, who joined West Ham from Southampton for £25million last summer, has now played two seasons of top-flight English football. United are considered frontrunners for his signature, with Tottenham also understood to be keen. However, West Ham are seeking in excess of £80million for the midfielder, a valuation United are reluctant to meet.
New Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho is also an admirer of Fernandes, but Los Blancos have already invested heavily this window. The player has effectively signalled his approval to join United and is prepared to let the two clubs negotiate the finer details.
Tottenham Express Interest in Rashford
The race for Marcus Rashford's services is reportedly intensifying, with Tottenham expressing interest in the Manchester United forward. The England international is currently on World Cup duty but remains a constant fixture in the headlines as speculation around his future continues.
Rashford spent a fruitful loan stint at Barcelona last season, but the Catalan giants opted against activating the buy clause in his agreement. According to The i Paper, Tottenham are eager to strike a deal for the 28-year-old. Spurs have already bolstered their defence with the signings of Jan Paul van Hecke, Andy Robertson, and Marcos Senesi, but manager Roberto De Zerbi is yet to strengthen his attacking options.
Tottenham's need for attacking reinforcements is underscored by Dejan Kulusevski's absence through injury for the entire 2025/26 season, while Dominic Solanke and Mohammed Kudus also spent lengthy spells on the treatment table. Xavi Simons was ruled out of the World Cup after a late-season injury.
Financial Hurdles Remain
Rashford's current £300,000-a-week salary is reportedly the primary obstacle to a move. However, he accepted reduced wages when joining Barcelona last summer. Should he be willing to take another financial hit to secure a permanent move, Spurs could launch a bid for the Three Lions forward.
Meanwhile, United's pursuit of Fernandes hinges on satisfying West Ham's demands. The Hammers retain significant leverage as their star seeks a departure from the London Stadium, but United are hopeful of reaching a compromise.
