EasyJet Baggage Rule: One Free Bag, Extra Fees for Overhead Locker Use
EasyJet Baggage Rule: One Free Bag, Extra Fees for Overhead Locker Use

EasyJet passengers are allowed one small cabin bag free of charge, but if the bag cannot fit under the seat in front, they may be required to pay an additional fee for overhead locker space. According to travel expert Ricky Durrance from Teletext Holidays, understanding these rules can save money and help maximize baggage allowance.

Baggage Allowance Details

The easyJet website states: "Our low fares include one small cabin bag free of charge." The bag can weigh up to 15kg, but passengers must be able to lift and carry it themselves. Additional bags can be purchased online at the time of booking or via Manage bookings, with fees varying by route, flight, and booking time. Buying online is always cheaper than at the airport, and charges may be steeper during busy travel periods.

Overhead Locker Fees

If a passenger's bag does not fit under the seat, they may need to pay for overhead locker space, which is limited and often comes at a price. For couples or groups, sharing a checked suitcase may be more cost-effective. A shared 23kg checked bag, using a similarly weighted case, leaves over 18.5kg for packing, compared to as little as 10.5kg for a large cabin bag after accounting for the weight of a hard-shell case (typically 3.5-4.5kg empty).

Booking Tips

Ricky Durrance advises: "It's also worth knowing that booking your baggage allowance sooner rather than later can help save you money." EasyJet's baggage fees are cheaper when added at the point of booking rather than closer to departure. For package holiday bookings, check baggage allowances early, ideally at the time of booking. Careful planning of luggage before travel is crucial to avoid extra charges.
