Arsenal are showing strong interest in Cardiff City teenage sensation Axel Donczew, according to a report from The Telegraph. The Gunners are keen on the highly-rated Bluebirds prospect, who became the youngest player in Cardiff City's history last season when he made his senior debut at just 15 years and 234 days old.
Potential Academy Move
Should Arsenal press ahead with a move, the report states the 16-year-old Wales youth international would initially join the club's academy rather than Mikel Arteta's first-team squad. Donczew has long been regarded as one of Cardiff's brightest academy prospects and has already made history after breaking the club's youngest-player record during the Vertu Trophy clash with Newport County in October 2025.
That record had remarkably only been set 64 minutes earlier by fellow academy graduate Robert Tankiewicz before Donczew replaced him and rewrote the history books once again.
Praise from Coaches
The midfielder has continued to earn rave reviews since his breakthrough, with Cardiff head coach Brian Barry-Murphy publicly praising the teenager's ability after another eye-catching display against AFC Wimbledon in December. After Donczew impressed despite Cardiff's heavy defeat, Barry-Murphy admitted he would have no hesitation in using him in the Championship if the opportunity arose.
"I think if they're good enough and he clearly is, then they're old enough for us with Axel," Barry-Murphy said. "It's just about using him when and where we need him really. As young as he is, we have to be mindful of not giving him too much too soon in terms of demanding too much from him, based on his age. There's an element of that. But if we need him in the coming weeks, if we haven't got players in that position, then we would use him for definite. He's a brilliant player."
International Recognition
The youngster also appears to be on Wales boss Craig Bellamy's radar already after conversations with Barry-Murphy. "I think Axel came into fruition because I think Craig Bellamy really liked him as an Under-16 playing for Wales," Under-21s boss Darren Purse told WalesOnline. "I think that came through him and the gaffer's (Barry-Murphy) conversations."
Comparison to Aaron Ramsey
Arsenal have built a reputation for recruiting some of the country's best young talent and appear to have identified Donczew as another player with significant long-term potential. It has echoes of the move Aaron Ramsey made back in 2008, when Cardiff received £5m after the then-17-year-old moved to north London. Ramsey did have a season of first-team exposure at Championship level behind him at that stage, however.
Any move for Donczew would represent another major test of Cardiff's ability to retain their top academy prospects, with the midfielder widely viewed as one of the club's standout young talents.
