Arsenal have reportedly agreed personal terms with Bruno Guimaraes on a five-year deal, bringing the midfielder closer to a move from Newcastle United. The Brazilian has informed the Magpies of his desire to leave, according to L'Equipe.
Personal terms agreed, fee still a hurdle
The 28-year-old has accepted a contract that would keep him at the Emirates until his mid-30s. However, Arsenal must now negotiate a transfer fee with Newcastle, who have rejected an initial offer and are reluctant to sell. The Magpies are holding out for a figure north of £100 million.
Newcastle's financial position has improved after selling Alexander Isak to Liverpool for a British record fee on deadline day last season, and already offloading Anthony Gordon to Barcelona and Sandro Tonali to Tottenham this window, raising £170 million. That reduces their need to sell, but Guimaraes' exit would be a major blow as the club's top talents continue to depart.
Guimaraes' impact at Newcastle
Since joining from Lyon in January 2022 for £40 million, Guimaraes has made 195 appearances and scored 31 goals. He captained Newcastle to their first domestic trophy in 70 years, winning the Carabao Cup two seasons ago. Lyon also benefit from a sell-on clause in any transfer.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is keen to strengthen after winning the Premier League, and despite having Declan Rice, Mikel Merino, and Martin Zubimendi in midfield, he sees Guimaraes as a key addition to take the side to the next level.
Newcastle's summer exodus
Newcastle's poor season followed the loss of Isak, and the departures of Gordon and Tonali have raised concerns about the club's direction and ambition. Losing Guimaraes would be a massive hammer blow as the club's leading lights continue to leave.
