The UK is experiencing its third heatwave of the year, with temperatures set to exceed 30C in Merseyside and other parts of the country. As schools have relaxed uniform rules, allowing students to wear PE kits, office workers are questioning whether they can dress more casually to cope with the heat.
What Does the Law Say About Shorts in the Office?
There is no specific law prohibiting shorts in the workplace. However, the final decision on appropriate attire rests with individual employers. Recent research suggests that smart shorts can be acceptable during hot weather, as long as they are tailored and presentable.
A new YouGov poll reveals that 68% of Brits believe men should be allowed to wear shorts in the office, a significant increase from just 37% ten years ago. This shift in public opinion reflects changing attitudes towards workplace dress codes during extreme heat.
Women's Office Wear During the Heatwave
Women generally have more options for staying cool while maintaining a professional appearance. Flowy skirts, tailored culotte trousers, and lightweight fabrics offer greater breathability. However, the choice of clothing ultimately depends on company policy and individual comfort.
Current Weather Forecast for the UK
The Met Office reports that Merseyside will continue to bask in intense sunshine, with temperatures reaching up to 34°C today. Saturday is expected to be another dry and sunny day, with maximum temperatures around 33°C in the north west.
Looking ahead, the heatwave is forecast to last until the end of next week. Met Office deputy chief forecaster Tom Crabtree said: "Many people will understandably want to know how long the current heatwave is likely to last. While temperatures are expected to ease across southeast England through the weekend and into next week, it won't be a straightforward end to the warm weather."
He added: "High pressure is expected to remain in charge through much of next week, but it will gradually migrate northwards. This means that an easterly wind will become established in the south, and the focus for the hottest conditions will migrate towards the southwest."
When Will the Heatwave End?
Weather maps indicate cooler conditions from next Friday, July 17, when deep red patches of heat turn to yellow and then blue. The Met Office notes: "Temperatures will be warm or very warm for most, perhaps hot at times in the southwest, but probably not as hot as of late."
As the heatwave continues, office workers are advised to check their company's dress code policy and consider wearing lightweight, breathable fabrics. While shorts may be acceptable in many workplaces, it is always best to confirm with your employer.
