Apple has issued a warning that your next iPhone could come with a much higher price tag. The company cites soaring costs of memory components as the primary reason for potential price increases.
Memory Costs on the Rise
The cost of memory, or RAM, is skyrocketing due to the explosion in artificial intelligence and the massive servers required to handle AI requests. Major memory manufacturers have shifted production toward AI-focused memory products, creating a knock-on effect for consumer devices like laptops, tablets, and smartphones.
Adding to the problem, the ongoing conflict in Iran has disrupted supplies of helium, a crucial gas used in semiconductor manufacturing. This has further pushed up costs.
Tim Cook's Warning
In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Apple CEO Tim Cook acknowledged the situation. "We're doing our best to mitigate the huge increases that are being passed to us, and we've been trying to shield our customers from the increases, but the situation has become unsustainable," Cook said. "There's less supply at a time when consumers want devices and the memory guys are passing along huge price increases."
Cook added, "We definitely need memory pricing and supply to return to reasonable levels for consumer products. That's the bottom line."
Impact on Upcoming iPhones
It remains unclear exactly when prices will rise, but Apple is expected to unveil its new iPhones in September, and these could be the first to see the hike. Rumors also suggest a foldable iPhone may launch later this year, which could be one of the most expensive smartphones ever if RAM prices continue to climb.
Consumers should stay tuned for more news in September, when Apple traditionally announces its latest products.
