Andrey Santos made his debut for Manchester United in a 1-0 pre-season friendly defeat to Wrexham on Saturday, offering glimpses of why the club invested £50 million to secure his services from Chelsea. The 22-year-old Brazilian played 45 minutes at a controlled pace in Helsinki's Olympic Stadium, but his performance hinted at a natural fit for United's midfield.
Santos Shows Early Promise
Santos operated as a deep-lying midfielder, a role that United believe suits his skill set as both a No.6 and a No.8. His first three minutes encapsulated his style: dropping between center-backs Harry Maguire and Ayden Heaven to collect the ball, intercepting a cross-field pass, and clearing danger. Manager Michael Carrick, a proponent of possession-based football, would likely appreciate Santos's desire to see as much of the ball as possible.
However, the performance was not flawless. Santos was bypassed by Bailey Cadamarteri when pressing, lost possession in the center circle leading to a Wrexham counter-attack, and made a sliding interception only after losing his marker. He also showed his competitive edge, shoving former United youngster Sam Smith after being caught in possession, and later winning the ball back after a misplaced pass to Bryan Mbeumo.
Defensive Lapses Cost United
The match's only goal came from Smith, who capitalized on defensive disorganization. Mason Mount lost George Thomason from a throw-in, Ayden Heaven failed to react, and Luke Shaw left Smith unmarked in the six-yard box to score from close range. Santos was well-positioned but could do little to prevent the strike.
Carrick fielded his strongest XI in the first half, replacing them with a youthful side after the break. The second-half lineup, captained by 19-year-old Tyler Fletcher, showed more intent and dominated possession against a different Wrexham XI.
Fletcher Impresses in Second Half
Tyler Fletcher, son of former United midfielder Darren, impressed with patient passing and probing movement. He received the ball from center-backs and turned to assess options, showing intelligence in finding space. While Santos is set for a key role this season, Fletcher could also break into the first-team picture despite United's plans to sign three new midfielders this summer.
United's youthful side struggled to break down a Wrexham defense featuring Conor Coady, Ollie Rathbone, and Kieffer Moore. The 1-0 defeat is a minor setback in pre-season, with Carrick likely to address concerns. Santos and Fletcher emerged as positives in an otherwise low-key friendly that drew just 20,000 spectators to the 36,500-capacity stadium.
