A father from Aldershot, Hampshire, has revealed how he managed to obtain breakfast, snacks, and groceries for nothing—and even earned a 5p profit—by using a technique known as deal stacking. Al Baker, 51, combined promotions across multiple apps to pick up food from Greggs and Sainsbury’s without spending a penny out of pocket.
How he did it
Al used a £5 Sainsbury’s gift card, which he acquired through a promotion on his First Direct banking app, to purchase items such as eggs and grapes. He then stopped at Greggs, where he claimed a free coffee via Octopus Energy and a free bacon and sausage baguette through O2 Priority. In total, his out-of-pocket expense was just 5p. After scanning his receipt on the Clear! app, he earned 10p back, resulting in a net profit of 5p.
Regular app checking is key
Al explained that the secret lies in regularly checking apps that many people already have but rarely use. “Banking apps, energy apps, phone provider apps – there are freebies and discounts sitting there every day, but lots of people never look,” he said. He routinely uses O2 Priority for weekly deals, such as discounted Greggs items, and his First Direct app, which recently rewarded him with multiple £5 vouchers for Greggs, Morrisons, and Sainsbury’s. He also monitors Octopus Energy perks, which offer a free hot drink each week.
Beyond food, Al says the apps regularly provide discounts on days out, including Vue cinema tickets and National Trust entry at a fraction of the usual price. He also uses cashback platforms like TopCashback and Quidco, as well as the JamDoughnut app, to earn money back on everyday spending.
A significant difference
Al, who shares cost-of-living tips on his blog, believes the strategy has made a real difference during tough times. “Over the course of the year, it adds up to huge amounts. I’m the type of person that pinches pennies – if I can save money, I will,” he said. “It can be the difference between actually being able to do something and not.”
