Bolton Couple Halve Living Costs by Moving onto Canal Boat
Couple Halve Costs Living on Canal Boat

A Bolton couple have traded their day jobs for a life afloat, cutting their monthly living costs by more than half and becoming 'addicted' to canal life. Daniel Blyth, 32, and Charlotte Blyth, 35, now spend around £800 a month on their narrowboat, down from £2,000 when they rented a house in Bolton.

From Motorboat to Narrowboat

Daniel first fell in love with narrowboats as a child during school holidays aboard a friend's boat. After meeting Charlotte in 2024, the pair became hooked on the lifestyle after watching YouTube videos of people living on canals. In 2025, they bought a small motorboat to test the waters, visiting Leeds, Manchester, and Liverpool. They then sold it and purchased a three-bedroom narrowboat for £10,000 via Facebook Marketplace.

Renovation and Downsizing

The couple sold almost all their belongings, realizing they 'did not need as many possessions.' They spent months renovating the boat, replacing engine boards, tackling rust, installing a new kitchen, repainting, and wallpapering. They moved aboard in June 2026.

Their monthly outgoings now total around £800, covering broadband, gas bottles, food, and a cruising licence. They live largely off-grid, using gas for cooking and satellite internet, and refill a 250-litre water tank for free at canal points.

Content Creation and Community

Inspired by other boating content creators, Daniel, a former handyman, and Charlotte, who worked in care, left their jobs to document their life on YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram. They have built a following of over 5,000 on Facebook, 1,800 on YouTube, and more than 100 on Instagram. 'We share the good days and the bad days – it’s not all glitz, glamour and relaxing,' Daniel said.

Challenges and Repairs

Adjusting to smaller quarters was tough. 'At first, we felt like we were on top of each other,' Charlotte laughed. They also face a £10,000 repair bill to replace the crumbling bottom of the boat, which could sink otherwise. 'We always say BOAT stands for ‘Break Out Another Thousand’ because something always seems to go wrong,' Daniel noted.

Life on the Water

With a continuous cruising licence, they move every 14 days, having traveled through Merseyside, Macclesfield, Staffordshire, and Worcestershire. Daniel, who has ADHD and struggles with mental health, finds the canals therapeutic. 'Being on the water, surrounded by wildlife and living on the canal really helps me. The canals just have this beauty about them. It feels so tranquil. We’re already addicted to this life,' he said.

Future Plans

The couple have no plans to return to land. 'We already talk about growing old together, getting a bigger boat and continuing to travel,' Daniel added. Charlotte said the experience has taught her patience and self-reliance: 'We do everything ourselves on the boat, and it feels really rewarding.'
