In the heart of east London, Londis N16 has become more than just a corner shop. Run by the Patel family since 1979, it now attracts customers from across the capital with its homemade Gujarati cuisine. The shop, originally opened by Karsan and Mahalaxmi Patel, is currently operated by the second and third generations, who grew up living above it.
The shop's Instagram account, managed by Priyesh Patel, 30, keeps its 7,000 followers updated on the changing menu and events like regular supper clubs. The food is prepared by Anju Patel in the on-site kitchen, while Mayank Patel works the shop floor. The family also runs a dessert operation led by Neelam Patel, offering cardamom, pistachio and rose cream-infused cakes and doughnuts.
Despite predictions of decline due to online shopping and the expansion of supermarket chains, convenience stores have proven resilient. Sales surged during the Covid-19 pandemic, and the sector has continued to grow faster than the overall grocery market, according to James Lowman, chief executive of the Association of Convenience Stores. He attributes this to a combination of multicultural offerings and adaptability to community needs.
Priyesh Patel says the family's ethos, passed down from his grandparents, is to be accessible and provide something for everyone. The shop's homemade food has broadened its customer base, drawing people from all walks of life, including visitors from abroad who have heard about the food by word of mouth.
