A grocery expert has revealed the optimal times to find yellow sticker discounts at major UK supermarkets, helping shoppers save on their weekly food bills. Richard Price, a Grocery Expert at BritSuperstore, explained that most chains like Morrisons, Aldi, and Asda use a two-tier discount system for perishable items.
Morning markdowns typically range from 10% to 15%, while evening reductions can reach up to 90% on products close to their sell-by dates. Price advised that the best time to hunt for bargains is early evening, around 5pm, when discounts are steepest. He suggested shoppers talk to store staff about local markdown times and focus on fruit, vegetables, and items like pre-cooked meals, fresh meat, dairy, and bread.
For Morrisons, customers should look for reductions on pre-cooked meals, fresh meat, dairy, pastries, and produce in the evening. At Aldi, the prime time is just before closing, with discounts up to 75% on bread, meat, and produce, as well as non-perishables with damaged packaging. Asda shoppers are advised to visit twice—early morning for the best fresh deals, sometimes reduced to pennies, and again in the evening for further markdowns.
Price emphasised buying only what can be used to avoid waste, regardless of the bargain price. He noted that the two-stage discount strategy helps supermarkets balance profit and waste reduction.
