Smolenski's, a well-known deli in Crosby, has reopened a quarter of a century after it first welcomed customers, now under the leadership of 19-year-old Ella Routledge. The family-run business has been given a fresh identity, with Ella's grandfather Keith, now 75, stepping back to hand over the reins.
A New Chapter for a Familiar Name
The revamped deli offers freshly prepared focaccia sandwiches, bagels, breads and other deli classics, alongside a range of matcha drinks and coffees. Its modern interior and grab-and-go offering distinguish it from a more traditional deli. Ella said the aim was to create a contemporary space combining Italian-inspired food with French-influenced design.
Speaking to the ECHO, the Edge Hill University student, who lives in Crosby, said: "It's such a wonderful opportunity to be given at such a young age, and I'm so grateful to be such a big part of it. It's amazing to think my family have all done this together. Every single one of us has had an impact, and that's what has made Smolenski's what it is. It's wonderful to see everything come together."
Family Ties and a Full-Circle Story
The reopening also brings a special connection to the neighbouring business, Azul Monkey, owned by Ella's parents, Marcus and Kellie Routledge. The couple launched the café five years ago, and it has since become an established destination in the area, receiving recognition from TripAdvisor every year.
Their history with the building stretches back further. Around 25 years ago, Marcus and Kellie visited the premises when the original Smolenski's was operating there. That visit marked their first date, during which they discussed their shared ambition of opening a coffee shop one day. That early conversation eventually helped inspire the business that now occupies number 157 College Road.
With Smolenski's returning alongside Azul Monkey, the family has seen those early aspirations come full circle. The ECHO's Colin Lane captured photographs of the newly opened deli, showing three generations of the family—Marcus, Ella and Keith—at the venue this week.
