Muscle Foods, a premium meat and high-protein meals retailer, has entered administration after customers complained of rotting meat and lenders lost confidence. The company went into administration on July 21 after small-business lender Bizcap submitted an application, according to court documents.
Customer complaints and spoiled food
Over recent months, the business faced scathing reviews about poor customer service and delivery issues. One customer said their order "turned up a day late soaking wet and warm," with no phone number to call and no reply to emails. Another reported: "I feel like I've lost a few years off my life from that smell. It was absolutely revolting." A third customer described opening a Rib eye steak and being "overwhelmed by a poor smell and a green liquid," but said nobody responded to their complaint.
Administration and rescue attempts
Administrators from insolvency firm Mackay Goodwin took charge of Muscle Foods Ltd on July 21 and are seeking a buyer for the business and assets. The company had already been rescued in 2025, when former CEO Nick Preston acquired full ownership of the Nottinghamshire-based business from GPS Food Group. Preston confirmed the latest news, stating that the business had been working on a debt restructuring project with support from Begbies Traynor. "Everything was going fine until one of our current lenders took a different path," Preston told The Grocer. He added: "I am devastated. Just when it appeared we were coming through the other side, a series of damaging setbacks over a sustained period of time left the business in a very precarious position."
Financial decline
Company accounts show turnover fell from £30.7 million in the year to June 30, 2024, to £23 million in the year to July 31, 2025. The impact on employees, suppliers, customers, and the brand's future has not yet been confirmed.
