M&S, Tesco & Aldi Christmas Party Food Taste Test: The Winner Revealed
M&S, Tesco & Aldi Christmas Party Food Taste Test Winner

After the main event of Christmas dinner is done, the true festive feast often begins with a sea of delicious, beige party nibbles. With hosting pressures high and budgets tight, Brits are stocking their freezers with easy-to-cook treats. But which supermarket offers the best festive bites this year?

The Festive Food Face-Off

To find the perfect party platter fillers, a comprehensive taste test was conducted, pitting offerings from three major retailers against each other: the premium Marks & Spencer, the value champion Aldi, and the high-street staple Tesco. The test, carried out in December 2025, judged three key dishes from each: prawn tempura, cheese bites, and mini burgers (or their closest equivalent). Each was scored on taste, appearance, portion size, and value for money.

Marks & Spencer: The Premium Contender

M&S entered the ring with its signature flair for quality. Their Breaded Tiger Prawns (£5.75 for 10) were declared the best of all prawns tested. The Japanese-style panko crumb was perfectly crisp, encasing large, succulent black tiger prawns. Despite the luxury price, they delivered on freshness and taste, cooking in just 10 minutes.

Their Caramelised Onion and Goats Cheese Tartlets (£8 for 12) offered a decadent mix of buttery pastry, rich cheese, and sweet onion. While some lost shape in the oven, the flavour was a standout. The Extra Mature Barber's Cheddar and Ham Scones (£8 for 8) were a creative wildcard, replacing mini burgers with savoury scones packed with honey and mustard ham and a mature cheese sauce.

Aldi: The Budget Powerhouse

Aldi fought back with impressive value and trendy flavours. Their Tempura King Prawns (£1.79 for 12) were the biggest and cheapest, offering 12 for under £2, though the prawn-to-batter ratio slightly muted the flavour. The star was the Black Truffle and Barbers Mac and Cheese Bites (£3.29). These golden balls combined the viral mac and cheese trend with luxurious black truffle, creating a rich and moreish bite that was a favourite among the cheese offerings.

The Mini Beef Burgers with Texas Style BBQ Sauce (£3.49) featured surprisingly juicy meat in a compact brioche bun. The sauce was messy but tasty, making them a fun, American-inspired option.

Tesco: The High-Street Challenger

Tesco's Crispy tail-on King Prawns (£3.50 for 10) were a disappointment, with small, lacking prawns inside a decent-looking crumb. However, they redeemed themselves with other items. The Crispy Bacon & Cheese bites (£3.50) were super moreish, with salty bacon cutting through the rich cheese, and were notably gluten-free. Their Mini cheeseburgers (£3.50 for 8) were declared the best burger tested, with a meaty, juicy patty and a proper cheese slice, though the microwave cooking instruction was best ignored.

The Final Verdict

The competition was fierce, with each supermarket having standout dishes. However, M&S was crowned the overall winner for its consistent quality, superior taste, and innovative takes on classics. Special commendations were awarded to two specific products: Aldi's Truffle Mac and Cheese Bites for their decadent flavour and Tesco's Mini Cheeseburgers for being the best in their category. For a festive spread that impresses, a mix of M&S luxury and these specific budget-friendly winners might be the perfect recipe.
