Why One Shopper Swapped Her Nespresso
Daily Express shopping contributor Rachael Davis replaced her Nespresso Vertuo Plus with the Philips L’Or Sublime Barista. She explained: "The Philips L’Or Sublime Barista has been my daily companion since I swapped my Nespresso for the cheaper coffee machine. Previously, I was using a Nespresso Vertuo Plus. While both look good and make great coffee, the pods for the Philips are much cheaper – making it a winner in my book."
The ongoing cost of pods was a major factor. Rachael noted: "Don't get me wrong, the Nespresso Vertuo Plus is a brilliant bit of kit, but it is only compatible with Nespresso's own pods. These cost on average 65p per pod, which meant for just 10 coffees I was paying £6.50." In contrast, the Philips machine works with L'OR, Nespresso-branded, and generic supermarket pods from Aldi and Lidl. She added: "I can get a pack of 10 coffee pods to fit the L’OR for just £1.85 in Aldi, a saving of £4.65."

Rachael praised its simplicity: "It's really simple to use: you just need to fill the water tank to the rear, lift the lever at the front and pop your pod in and then select what size of coffee you want — small, medium or large. The drip tray is adjustable, so any mug will fit."
While it only makes espresso, Rachael noted it can serve as a base for lattes or cappuccinos when paired with a milk frother like the Nespresso Aeroccino3. She added: "This coffee machine doesn’t do any fancy drinks, in fact, it just makes espresso, but don’t let that put you off."
Drawbacks and Customer Feedback
The main drawback, according to Rachael, is the lack of pod-scanning technology found on the Nespresso Vertuo Plus. She said: "The Vertuo scans the pods to determine the length and strength of the coffee, which I did find worked particularly well for precision when it came to lattes and iced coffees. Cynics would say the barcode system just stops third-party pods from being used, however."
On Amazon, the machine has a 4.4-star rating. One customer wrote: "At £49 against a recommended retail price of £109.99 this is an absolute steal... Previously, I had two Nespresso Inissia machines, and they lasted an average of just three years each. I think I was unlucky, but even so. I've had my L'OR machine only a couple of days, and already I love it. Excellent coffee, good design, simple to use."
Another shopper commented: "Despite its compact design, it has a decent water tank capacity, so I don’t need to refill it frequently."
